RVALUG News for May 2025

Greetings RVALUG Friends!
Here is your summary of what the LUG has been up to the last few weeks!

‘A’ is for April and Ashland!

This past month, RVA LUG Presented a city and Train Layout for Ashland Train Day, an annual Train Festival that we have participated in for years. The event was a huge success judging by the visitor feedback we received and all presenting RVALUG members had a great time. Here you can see how our display has grown over the years, with a photo from our 2022 layout, compared to our display this year.

Many thanks to our event coordinator Andy Glascott who worked with the Ashland organizing committee to secure us a great spot for our layout following the unfortunate fire that rendered our previous display location unavailable.

Andy was also available to give a guided tour to the local NBC news affiliate, Channel 12, for their about town news segment:

Here are the upcoming Build challenges for our next few meetings.

May:

May the force be with you! The May build challenge is to build a microscale Star Wars ship. In general, microscale LEGO building focuses on creating models that are smaller than the standard minifigure scale. Thanks for the suggestion Sean W.
June:
Opening night at the Builtmor Theater! The June build challenge is to build a show for Tom’s Builtmor Theater. Choose a favorite Broadway show or movie moment to be featured in Tom C’s theater. Who knows, maybe you will hit the bigtime and be featured in the show rotation at Brick Fair Chantilly! Tom’s build guide for this challenge can be downloaded from our website below. Thanks Tom!

Better Know a LUG Member!

Our featured lug member this month is Andy Glascott!

Tell us about your favorite LEGO theme.
Trains, trains and more trains! I’ve been building them since I was 6 or 7 and as anyone who has seen my layout will know, the collection has grown ever since!

What is the last LEGO set you built? What did you like about it? What made you buy it?
I don’t buy many sets, but picked up the McLaren P1 (set #42172) earlier this year. I love the challenge of building the big Technic cars and have a collection of them going back 40+ years. As a kid I loved the fact the gears moved and “did things” rather than the city type cars that just had rolling wheels – moving parts in Lego have always caught my attention, hence the interest in motorised trains as well. I bought it partly because a youth group I had worked with for 3 years gave me a gift card and I wanted to use it for something unique that would also be attached to them and my memories of my time with them.

What is the earliest LEGO memory in your life?
Vague memories of arguing with my dad about the number of wheels a bus we were building needed – I would have been no more than 3 or 4… Lots of memories of train sets from early childhood too, and building some of the early Technic sets I still have.
