RVALUG Commissions

Occasionally we at RVALUG get requests to build something specific for a particular event – in 2023 VEDP commissioned us to build 9 models representing different regions of Virginia for example. While we’re always happy to receive these requests, it has become apparent to us that it would be helpful to have some guidelines on our website for anyone thinking about approaching us, so before you hit the “contact us” button, read on to find out what happens when you do.

Our response to a request:
We’re delighted to receive requests, and would love to hear from you and be able to say yes to every request. However, our ability to do that depends on several things:
– Availability of (an) interested builder(s) – RVALUG builders are a creative bunch with a wide range of skills and interests, and focus on different themes. When we receive a request we’ll put it out to the wider membership and see if anyone responds. Please remember we are all busy people and it may simply be a time issue.
– Lead time – how soon do you need the build? See below for more information.
– Cost – who is paying for the build and who will keep it after the commission finishes? See below for more details.
– The size and complexity of the project – while bigger or more detailed projects are exciting they also come with extra challenges.
– If someone is available to take on your commission we will connect them with you to fine tune your request and agree terms. If no-one is available we will let you know within 2 weeks of your request.

Lead time:
None of us, sadly, are full time Lego builders, we all have work and/or family commitments, so “can you get this built in a week?” is likely to be a no. While each of us has a slightly different approach, the broad process works along the lines of “design the build, source the parts, put it all together”. For a 32×32 stud footprint (a standard Lego baseplate), two to three months is a realistic timescale. Obviously, larger or smaller builds will take more or less time.

Cost:
The core question here is who will own the build after the commission finishes? If you intend to keep the build for posterity, please expect to pay for all the parts and the builders time. If you intend to return the build to the builder after the event it’s fair to expect them to pay for the parts but please be prepared to pay for their time and skills. At this stage in the process it’s impossible to give you a ballpark figure because there are so many variables involved. Please do contact us if you have an idea and we can put together a proposal reflecting your needs. If we agree to take on your build please be prepared to pay 50% up front and 50% on completion.

Still interested?
Great! Hit the “contact us” button below and tell us about your idea, we’re excited to hear about it.
