What do we do at a Meeting?

Chris Ost

At a Lego Lug (LEGO Users Group) meeting, members gather to share their love of LEGO building and showcase their creations. They may also participate in building challenges and contests, exchange building tips and techniques, and discuss new and upcoming LEGO sets and themes. Some LUGs also have guest speakers or host special events such as building workshops or LEGO-themed parties.

Lego produces a dynamic toy. If you like puzzles you can buy a set and build it. If you like to build puzzles, you can buy a lot of bricks and make your own puzzle. If you like to play with toys, you can buy a set, make your best friend build it and then just play with it on the carpet. If you like to flash your geek cred, then you can buy a set, build it and display it on your desk at work.

You might have noticed that none of these are group activities. Much like Solitaire, Lego products have very few group activities. So asking what “What happens at a Lug Meeting?” It Isn’t surprising.

Our number one activity is social. If you are the kind of person that likes to work in a well lighted room assembling a four foot model of the Eiffel Tower, then you might not be the person that goes to a lot of Bars, Church Socials or even Bingo. So we make time on a Saturday once a month to hang out with others that enjoy the hobby.

Secondly, we use this time to discuss collaborative builds for shows or conventions we attend as a club. From time to time we volunteer to construct cities, train yards, and displays for presentation to our Richmond, VA community. So we will use this time to talk about what we want to build, how big, or who is going.

One of the best parts of a LEGO Lug (LUG) meeting is the opportunity to connect with other LEGO enthusiasts and share your passion for building. You can showcase your own creations, get inspiration from others, and learn new building techniques. Additionally, LUGs often host special events and contests that can be both fun and challenging, and give you a chance to show off your skills and compete with other builders.

Another great part of LUGs is that it can be a great way to learn about new LEGO sets and themes and to hear about upcoming releases. You can also get a chance to purchase sets before they are released to the general public.

Overall, LUGs are a great way to build a sense of community among LEGO enthusiasts and to have fun while engaging in a hobby you love.
